I have recently focused on painting roses. My inspiration came from a visit to ‘David Austin Roses’ gardens, Shropshire, during the Pandemic. The sheer elegance of each rose, together with the colour intensity and fragrance was captivating. It sent my senses into overdrive and it was wonderful to see how effortlessly nature continued around us during this challenging period.
My approach to painting each rose has been influenced by several artists including the renowned painters Winifred Nicholson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Claude Monet and Henri Matisse. Recently, I have discovered contemporary botanical artists such as Rosie Sanders, whose mastery, attention to detail and elegant approach I admire.
"There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted. ”
